I must admit that I have had an on again off again relationship with the idea of using Intuition as the basis for decision-making. Trained as an engineer and steeped in the scientific method, decision-making based on rational thought and consideration seemed to me to be the most logical choice.

Having grown older and, hopefully, wiser, I have learned that with enough experience you can trust your intuition in many situations. Intuition is especially valuable when we are in a less structured, more dynamic situations. You know, those situations in which you might not have time to ponder options and to slowly decide on a course of action.

The ability to make correct decisions quickly based on your intuition is the sign of the expert. No one trusts the intuition of a rookie or someone inexperienced in the field. No, it’s the grizzled old salesman who can seemingly sell “Ice to an Eskimo” and the old soldier who relies on his “Combat Antenna” to avoid dangerous situations that we tend to trust. Intuition is “Street Smarts” versus a reliance on book learning.

Just as with rational decision-making, intuition is a skill that can be learned and developed. The first step is to gain technical knowledge of your field or expertise in the real world. The second step is to start, “trusting your gut” more and more. With time, you will find that your intuition sharpens and improves. After a while, it is you who will be the expert.
